Ch 2 Visual Elements of Art Essay
Where normally I would consider a warm color like red to feel comforting and "homey", the red in the Night Cafe seems jarring and ominous. The way the light from the lamps is emphasized makes it seem as though they are the only thing holding back the night. This painting makes me feel uneasy, though I cant quite put my finger on why.
In contrast, Vincent's Bedroom is warm and inviting. The sun is lighting up the room. It conjures feelings of waking up on a bright sunny day, with all of the possibilities of the day still waiting for you.
Ch 5 Drawing Essay
There are two major divisions of drawing mediums, dry and fluid. Dry mediums include silverpoint, pencil, charcoal, chalk, pastel and wax crayon. Fluid mediums involve the application of ink in a number of ways. Both types of materials are able to achieve a wide variety of effects by utilizing different techniques.
Ch 13 Art of the Ancients List
Sources of water (fertile crescent, nile) were an indispensable part of egyptian life. It had spiritual significance because without it life would not have existed.
Tombs were decorated with everyday objects and scenes depicting common earthly activities because happiness in the afterlife was believed to be ensured through the continuation of certain aspects of earthly life.
Prior to the dawn of the old kingdom, art was primarily funerary offerings. Ivory carvings, pottery, sculpted figures. Sculptures of the deceased were placed in tombs, along with the likenesses of the people that surrounded them in life.
Egyptians used colors with a cosmetic palette to apply dark colors around their eyes to deflect the sun's glare. Some, like the Narmer Palette, were very intricate and commemorated historical events.
Tomb sculpture included large scale figures in the round, usually from hard materials that would endure. Color on these sculptures was fairly rare due to the impermanence of the colors used.
Figures were rendered according to a canon of proportions rather than on optical fact.
Conventional attributes of the pharaohs include; a finely pleated kilt, a linen headdress gracing the shoulders, and a long thin beard (which was present on male and female pharaohs).

I spent more time than I would like to admit exploring this site. I enjoyed reading about Tim Burton’s childhood and learning about all of the many outlets of his creativity. He draws magical and fantastical creatures and places. It is neat that MoMA took so much time to recreate those works in model form, so you could really experience his creations in three dimensions. Aside from recreating a topiary from Edward Scissorhands, there is a giant balloon which shows all of the detail of Burton’s brush strokes. There is information on his filmography and slide shows of his drawings. One of the most interesting slide shows are of his sketchbooks while he was in school. Aside from the fantastical creations you would normally associate with Burton, there are also more realistic drawings of the human form and still life. So much talent!
Module 4 Discussion: "Lovin' It" (modern art period)
I am very partial to impressionism. I like the emotion they convey rather than focusing reproducing every detail. The play of light is whimsical. I feel like these paintings are “easy”, I don’t have to think hard about the meaning or the emotion behind it. In contrast, works of expressionism take time to take it all in. It is the same portrayal of emotion and feeling, but it takes time to immerse yourself in the work to get the same level of understanding.
Throughout this course I have enjoyed learning about all the different art periods, mediums, genres, etc. What I have found, is that even though not everything is my favorite, I have an appreciation for it all. The elements I gravitate towards are emotion and light.
